ROUNDTABLE SESSION (TUES)
I decided to sign up for the roundtable session this week as I saw it as an opportunity to listen to the perspectives of lecturers and fellow classmates who have not seen my project before. I find this week to be the right time because I had recently started working on a prototype idea and want to make sure I am heading in the right direction before focusing on improving the quality to transform the prototype into an actual, well-polished artefact.
Overall Feedbacks:
𖥔 Concerned about how sound is brought into the picture
𖥔 Playback idea is interesting
𖥔 'Commercial Nolstagia' brand's signature audio eg. Nokia is recognisable
𖥔 What is it about the sound (if it’s a sound never heard before); Association is strengthened for having heard multiple times in their lives
𖥔 Tone down the statement; Argument- 'Which is more powerful, photographs or Sound' is too strong, might turn ppl off, it's like a “duh” scenario. However, I beg to differ that it wasn't an obvious pick as my survey results reflected that 33.3% of the participants voted photographs to be more powerful in triggering memories than sounds.
𖥔 Can look at different mode of archives all around the world, other than a postcard “momento”- look at other artists project at the side - A sense of collective memory; The way it’s presented, there are these soundscapes; Make it more legible to people looking at it, the way it’s presented, make them notice themes, More naunce
𖥔 The chair is the most interesting object (don’t see it used as much)
𖥔 Interesting thing is trying to visualise sound
𖥔 Better quality in design outcomes; Quality in design and craftsmanship; Making the interface more presentable; Once the quality is improved, users will value the work more; Can be resolved through skills acquired as a TouchDesigner; Focus should be on designing for this particular scenario with quality in mind, execution; Pursue and design to fit it to my scenario
𖥔 The gallery exhibition can be in the classroom
𖥔 Not one way but two-way, interactive element, giving sound and taking their memory responses; Growing community, are there other ways - How to evolve to collect those stories, how will them then be integrated into the design, is there a screen, how does it come and grow to life. Sounds from audience? Together or alone?
𖥔 Don't do anything new, now is the time to go deep and further expand on the project
𖥔 Singapore artefact to provoke memory
(data collection is still ongoing)
Exhibit A - 'The Memory Penpal Postcards' and Exhibit B - 'The Sound Canvas'
MOVING FORWARD (WED)
In conclusion, I was relieved that lecturers from other atelier -
Vikas, understood my project and I received some pointers from a 3rd party perspective.
I have then summarised the key pointers I can work on to further improve on my project:
- ✧ Refine the way of presenting my work in an exhibition installation format, in a way where
it's more legible to people looking at it, making them notice themes and the purpose - ✧ Improve on quality and design, transforming the prototype into an artefact
- ✧ Look into different ways of collecting momentos other than a postcard for 'Exhibit A - The Memory Penpal Booth'
TRIP TO ARTFRIEND (WED)
Made a trip to artfriend in search for a 4X4 canvas, 12x12 boxes as the canvas backing and white foam boards that can be used as the 'backing wall'. This is to hide the messy wirings and touchboard so the whole set-up would look a lot cleaner. I visualise the set-up to be simple, organised.
The flow of the installation should be understood at one glance, where the audience would select each sound recordings, take their time to listen to see if any personal memories are stimulated, before interacting with the next canvas, in a systemetical order.
MAKING A CHOICE
In the end, I have concluded the best option is Option A, as it encourages the audience to pause and listen, rather than clickling away within just 5 to 10 seconds of active listening, which is highly likely to happen if I opted for Option B.
Individual 12 Small Canvases
(Option A)Individual 1 Big Canvas
(Option B)
PRACTICAL WALKTHROUGH (FRI)
Had a sharing session today about our progress but it was still work in progress for me. I will be sharing on the postcards that I have been working hard on collecting memories from family, friends and strangers who were kind enough to share their personal stories with me. These stories will play a huge part in the making of protoype A where I will be featuring selected ones that I think were the most personal, interesting and unique. Nonetheless, I still took the time to categorise them into different categories by taking note of similarities in each memories. In the end, the categories I had were - music, swimming, playing, event, grandparents, road trip, gaming, pets and crying.
all the autobiographical stories of memories collected finding similarities to organise them
respondent drawing his memory respondent writing and describing his memory
gathering the survey respondents memories zarer's sharing about his setup sketch which is the next thing on my to-do list my table sharing session
